With the sea as inspiration

When Vibeke Klint had to design a rug, she usually started with a watercolor sketch.

The blue color was characteristic of Vibeke Klint, who was inspired by the view from her home and workshop in Taarbaek directly to the see, and by the changing blue, green and gray shades of the sea and sky.

Her rug VK-2 from the late 1970s is a good example of this. The rug was designed in the same period as her rug VK-1, which she designed for The Danish National Bank, and is characterized by a tight, minimalist geometric pattern in white diagonal stripes on a colored background. The minimalist pattern seems very simple, but the simpler a design is, the harder it is to weave. Nothing can be hidden. Then as today, only the most skilled weavers are able to weave with the precision needed for the design to work as intended.

In close collaboration with the Klint family, NORDICMODERN has recently put the original VK-2 rug design into production as part of their collection of selected Vibeke Klint designs.

The rug is available in 3 sizes and 4 colors.

All rugs benefit from lying on an underlay. The smaller the rug, the more important it is that the rug has an underlay. It extends the lifetime of the rug and makes the rug more slip proof

Vibeke Klint (1927-2019)

Vibeke Klint (1927-2019) has been described as the 20th century’s most significant Danish weaver and designer. Her life’s work, which includes everything from rugs, home and clothing textiles to interior design and decoration projects, teaching and communication, is an important part of Danish design and Danish cultural heritage

All rugs by NORDICMODERN are made of 100% wool from New Zealand

Wool has a natural coating of fat which makes it dirt repellant.

Furthermore, as opposed to most other fibres, wool does not burn.

Thus, wool does not need to be treated with fire retardants in order to be used even at places with special fire requirements.

Daily cleaning

Use the vacuum cleaner frequently when the rug is new. It is normal that the rug produces shed fluff for a period of time. Vacuum in the direction of the plie and never with the brush down.

Immediately dab the area with a white cotton cloth to prevent the stain from penetrating the fibres.

Carefully sprinkle a bit of water on the stain and dab again with a white cotton cloth.

If the stain does not disappear, the rug should be cleaned by a professional, for instance:

In order to avoid staining from the floor it is recommended to use an underlay.

Rugs in warp repp technique should always have an underlay.

The use of an underlay also assures that the rug lies even and prolongs the lifetime of the rug

It is a good idea to turn the rug around twice a year to avoid uneven wear and to place e.g. plastic or felt protection under the feet of heavy furniture standing on the rug.

Note that the colors may fade if the rug is exposed to strong sunlight for a longer period of time.
